This is cross-posted on another Saab site I participate on but thought I'd post a follow up to my post about what to pull off a parts car in prep for a long cross country drive. In brief, the trip went great. Prior to departing from MD I'd had a mechanic go through the car. It turned out I had a new radiator but the earlier model that has the ability to add in a secondary switch for the radiator fan as my car has an intermittent failure of the EDU. He also installed a new middle muffler, crank seal and a general mechanical blessing. I also put on new tires -- Sumimoto HTR A/S P03.
The car performed amazingly and for the most part the EDU worked giving me a good sense of comfort that the cooling system worked well. Over 3400 miles of driving I averaged 61 MPH and got 26.8 MPG according to the trip computer.
I really like these tires -- quiet and very good grip in all kinds of conditions (did not run across any snow).
There were only two mishaps: a dump truck let loose a few pebbles which turned into bullets as I approached them at 95 MPH and both headlights now have 2" holes in them. Somehow the windshield and hood escaped any damage. The other issue didn't happen until 2 hours from home but I lost all turbo boost. This turned out to be the wastegate actuator rod disconnecting from the bell crank on the waste gate. I had to limp home but managed to figure out this pretty quickly and now all is well.
This is an amazing car. Comfortable and easy to drive. I arrived to the end of an 11 hour drive feeling refreshed and without any of the normal road fatigue. Passing in this car is effortless and the only danger is that its so much fun to get on the gas that you just don't want to return to normal speed. In the states where the speed limit is 80 MPH, I was able to cruise at 95 MPH effortlessly.
What doesn't work:
Cruise Control -- I'm not sure whats going on here but it seems pretty complex.
Fog Lights -- these only seem to work sometimes. I haven't dont much investigation yet.
Drivers Seat Heater -- I'm not surprised, but it would be nice to fix for winter.
What does work: pretty much everything else. Its a fantastic car.
