I'm in the process of repairing the original speedometer. So far I've had 2 failed units. I've looked at a lot of information and found a really nice tutorial on line for a Volvo that used the Tazaki speedometer. Evidently, the Tazaki units, obviously, are prone to failure. Go here "Volvo 700-900 Speedometer Repair" to see the tutorial and explanations. Parts lists and circuit board design can be found here, too.

As oon as I get the parts, I will be doing the repair work and hopefully have a great running speed/odometeer in the end.

The author brought up the point that Panasonic has a better reputation than the others due to commitment to quality. I have to agree with my experience of Panasonic over others.

He also talks about cleaning up solder joints which is a major cause for premature failure. The dirty or flux is acidic and causes failure. There are about 5 can capacitors that I plan to replace. Again, the tutorial explains the problem of overheating the capacitor when replacing and +- orientation.

My thought, if you're going to remove the speedometer, why not try spending $15-20 to repair it…………. if you have a handle on how to desolder, solder small can style capacitors. Try DigiKey or Mouser for the parts. My experience with Radio Shack is checkered with problems, but, if Radio Shack is all you can find, give it a go. It's better than spending time over and over. Even worse spending $200-$300 for a repaired display. If you are concerned about doing the work, carefully choose a vendor by going tothe web and searching for shops to buy a repaired unit or have them repair your original.

Also, not mentioned by the tutorial is to replace the light bulbs while at it if you can find the bulbs.
