Saab 9000 transmissions....are an embarrassment. I have test driven at least a dozen 5 speeds before buying my car. Every single one of them were "rubbery and vague" with about half of them showing signs of syncro problems in either 2nd or 3rd gear. Maybe its the rubber connector on the linkage ,,maybe not. I finally settled on my car even though I was not fully satisfied with the trans performance. After driving that many cars I gave up expecting any improvement. I love the rest of the car but to this day, what should be a pleasant experience of running through the gears in a sporting but not abusive manner,..always ends up less than satisfactory. Drive a Honda...or BMW..thats what a manual transmission should feel like. Im expecting a complete rebuild soon...will it be the magic cure? probably not. Saab/ZF engineers really dropped the ball on this part of the car..the 9000 turbo is a sports sedan...and it is not unreasonable to expect a sports sedan to perform in a sporting manner. That means reasonably fast gear changes and durability. In my Honda ,..I can choose ANY forward gear at ANY speed and there is no balking or resistance from the box at all..and I never hesitate before letting out the clutch ,.unsure wether ive selected 1st or 3rd. Do I sound disgruntled? you bet. Do I wuv my 9000, yup. Ive owned many Saabs over the years and am a true dedicated Saab fan..but I refuse to whitewash or pretend that these 5 speeds arent crap. I know ..I know..ive jinxed it now...ring ring...hello Erickson ??? ;- (
