I have an '87 900S (non-turbo), '88 9000 Turbo and '91 9000 Turbo and would definately recommend the turbo. Of course, the non-turbo 2.3 liter engine in the later 9000 ('91 and after?) does produce 150 hp, so it's better than my 125 hp engine from my 900S.
Comparing the '87 and '88, which share the same 2.0 L engine (125 hp vs. 160), I can say that the non-turbo feels anemic in comparison. I think it must also have to do with a difference in torque. I've also heard people say that the turbo place in the exhaust path smooths out the vibrations and sound, and the turbo certainly seems smoother.
The only drawback to the older turbos is the lack of torque below about 3000 rpm, something they fixed with the 2.3 L turbo. The '91 9kt is wonderful to drive. I once drove a non-turbo '92 9000S, which did have power, but was nowhere close to exhilarating.
I don't know of any significant difference in fuel economy, if both cars are driven conservatively. Stomping on the gas with the 200 hp engine will certainly consume more fuel than with the 150 hp engine, however.
The turbo engine's power was a little addictive, when I first bought the '91 about three months ago, but I've calmed down now. Good luck shopping.
