the headgasket finally is calling it a life. This is only the second major required repair (clutch last year) on my '88 9KT with 180 000km. THere really haven't been any points of concern in the maintenance department other than the yearly fluid flushes, belts, a few bushings, motor mounts, and all that $$ for go-fast bits;-)
MOst likely culprit for the failed gasket were several "run-hot" episodes and a dodgy coolant change history from the previous owner (contributing to these episodes!). It has never boiled over but I did loose all my coolant last year (split by-pass hose) in the ski hill parking lot,,,after a 20Km climb. THe 82C fan and thermo were probably the only saving graces from having a major catastrophe on the hill!
First indicator of a problem was a terrible misfire under boost (from 10-15psi) and a (now consistent) hiss from the expansion tank cap. Some dampness was on cylinder #2 piston for quite some time, but only now it's clean.,,,,,,,,,,,,today it started to get its poppy idle. Still no change in the oil, but I'm loosing a good half a litre per day of water.
I was told it was a 6hour job,,,unfortunately I don't have the time.
