Brian, I know what you mean. I had the check valve and safety valve replaced three years ago, and I'm frankly offended by the attitude that the best thing to do is to replace *EVERYTHING* and go from there. I knwe I'd have to put some bucks into this car, but hell...the estimate I got this afternoon was for $3900!!! If I wanted to sell the car for eight grand or $8500, I'd still have to put the money into it. Not that I want to sell it, or anything.
I guess what I'm most burned about is that this dealer just picked up the Saab franchise and now they've blown a good chance to develop a good relationship with Saab owners in the area. Since it's pretty clear that the service writer doesn't have enough Saab experience (and, from what I've been told, the dealer hasn't hired any Saab service writers), I can't imagine that knowledgeable owners will trust these guys any further than they can be thrown.
I've been offered a used TCS computer, which I will buy regardless of whether or not it is determined to be one of the real problems. If it isn't I'll hold onto it in case I need it some day, or perhaps I'll sell it to another Saab owner in need.
I spoke to the service manager at Roberti Motors (independent dealer which I just found out is actually an authorized service center) this evening. I bought my car there four years ago, and they're straight shooters. I was told that unless the car had been underwater, the computer shouldn't be the source of the problem. I'm going to get the car back from the dealer tomorrow, then make an appointment to limp it up to Kingston. Should be a brutal trip, but I hope it'll be worth it.
