stainless steel braided brake line problem

Hi-
Having just posted "brake work is easy" on this BB, now I have a brake problem I can't figure out. Funny how that works. Please be forgiving and help me out.
I'm trying to install some stainless braided brake lines on my '91 9kt. Unscrewing the old brake hose from the rear caliper went fine, once I learned to rotate the caliper on the emergency brake cable as I unscrewed the line, but it looks like the other end of the flexible hose is a female fitting (which matches what I see on my new hoses), but that it's welded in place. It appears to pass through a square metal plate, 2" wide, which is attached to the underbody, with three spot welds to hold it in place. This seems crazy - who would spot weld a brake line which will eventually need replacement?
What should I do?
thanks.
