9000T Hood Release Cable

This past Saturday I went to pop the hood on my '88 9KT and the hood release handle simply went limp. I checked and found the cable had come loose from the handle. I popped the two hood latches with a screwdriver to get the hood open. I throughly lubricated the latches since they appeared to be little stiff and that may have been the cause of the cable pulling loose from the handle inside the car.
Question: The end of the hood release cable in my car is simply a stiff wire with a 90 degree bend in it. Is there supposed to be some sort of clip to keep it attached to the handle or do I simply thread the end through the hole in the handle and hope it stays? I'm considering looking for some sort of clip I can attach to the end of the wire to keep it from pulling out of the hole in the handle.
Any ideas? Thanks.
