I think you may be able to salvage "little fan thingy" by dusting with canned air and lubing it up. Now the temp. question- I think it should be halfway on the guage. I have dealt with this issue for years because of relay problem up front either not turning off or having a bad contact and not turning on- the whole ordeal began when I simply tried to ensure the best contact possible by using a contact cleaner in the relay socket areas which attacked the plastic housing a bit- the risidual by-product flowed down to the prong-contact areas and built up some resitance on various relays including headlights- anyway, I have rewired around from underneath to my high-speed fan relay and fixed that problem- I also wired in a heavy duty Littlefuse brand 30 anp fuse(in place of standard one)to control this circuit and have no further relay heat build up malfunctions. I also replaced thermostat myself- quite easy. She now runs at halfway- sometimes a little above, but then I hear the fan kick-in and bring it back down- this is true on the hottest of Florida days- so you should be able to enjoy the "halfway" mark wherever you are. The engine performs noticeably better at or below halfway mark.
