As I understand it, the CD and EQ are not compatible with standard aftermarket cassette receivers. I could be wrong on that, but such is generally the status quo for any vehicles coming with or having the options of both cassette and CD units and EQs. I'm not at all familiar with the stereos of Saabs newer than mine however, so again, I might be mistaken. If so, I can certainly recommend some good aftermarket stuff! These days, it's not too hard to find a good tape deck for a very good price.
As far as reliability and sound quality, Sony and Kenwood are near the top, though certainly most of the major brands (Alpine, Clarion) make very good cassette decks. You'd expect that, so really you're just buying one that has the features and possibly styling that you want. My personal favorite is Blaupunkt, for the excellent ergonomics, useful features, great prices, and styling. My opinion is that most of the aftermarket decks sold these days are way too flashy for anything but a riced-out Honda or Toyota. However, some older folks at work seem to like that, so perhaps I'm the exception. I prefer good ergonomics over flashy appearance and multiple submenus and commands. The setup I'm running in a six year old and two or three year old Blaupunkt. The new Blaupunkts are good too, perhaps a bit better in sound quality and some features, but I think they're starting to cave to market demand for more flashy looks.
Check out my site for ideas, though it's probably a lot more than you want to do. :) In the Saab 9000 section, then click Custom Stereo Installation.
