I find it unusual that anything would actually be wrong with the front speakers after only 3-4 years, but maybe you're like me and they just aren't up to your standards of sound quality. :) When I removed the stock ones out of my car after 9 years of being in there, they still worked just fine, though were nowhere near up to the task of cleanly handling the power from my aftermarket amplifier. The stock woofers were actually pretty good though, and I expect they made a few improvements between 1987 and 1997 (one would hope!) In any case, you can either go with a quality 4" coaxial, which are really pretty cheap these days (typically I wouldn't spend more than $100-120 a pair, some can be had for half of that and still sound good at anything but ear-splitting volumes). You can get a good pair of separates for a little bit more money, though the sky is the limit as far as maximum price on those. I highly recommend looking into Madisound if you want the absolute best sound quality though, for a price that doesn't break that bank (too much). For coaxials, you can get them most anywhere. Boston Acoustics makes some great ones, and Kenwood's are surprisingly good for the price.
