What's wrong with KYB's?

I have read about people complaining about the harshness of the KYB's. I am wondering what they are comparing them too? Any 'performance' shock will be stiffer. Koni's and Bilteins are quite a bit stiffer than stock.
I have used KYB GR-2's on other cars and found them decent, especially for the price.
Anyways, I am due for some shocks and plan on coupling them with some lowered springs via B&G or Jamex. Would the KYB's work with these? I can get them for a 1/3 the price.
