I've been a Saab owner/driver/fan since the days of the Saab two-strokers, and I bought a 94 cse with just over 80,000 miles last April from a NY dealer which specializes in used Saabs. They told me it was in excellent condition and I drove it and it seemed pretty good AND the price was very good, so, having driven some others and thinking this one was essentially as good, I bought it without having an indep mechanic check it out - BIG mistake. Anyhow, after repairing a bunch of things which were not evidently wrong when I bought it - the timing chain (you can actually hear the "clatter" if its loose), the water pump (which went out within 1500 miles), the idler pulley, the SRS sensors and some associated wiring, the driver's side window mechanism (which went out after about 2000 miles), and the headlight high/low switch (which had an intermittent failure which wasn't evident when I trested the car but turned out to be caused by two failed relays) I finally have a pretty good car. The used car dealer had a third-party warranty available which I purchased and I'm really glad I did, because they've covered the bulk of the engine repairs (but none of the electrical or non-engine stuff) and more than paid for the cost of the warranty.
SO - I stil really like this car, but I'm a little concerned about what else might jump up and bite me. The moral of this is get a good Saab mechanic to check our the car thoroughly. They are really great cars, if well maintained, and you'll find lots of them with well over 100,000 miles.
good luck
Paul
