If you car seems to be running well however (if the mixture is really rich, it actually might seem to be running better, except for the black smoke out the tailpipe under hard acceleration), there are a few things to check. I'd determine when your 02 sensor was last replaced, generally it should be done every 60k. I replaced mine and it made a huge difference in MPG, this was a few years back. About a year and a half ago, I did the 02 sensor again, as well as the Air Mass Meter, these two together made an even bigger improvement, and got rid of the rich mixture (wasn't passing emmissions testing as a result). The cheaper things do matter to, spark plugs (are they gapped correctly and don't have any unusual deposits on them?), distributor cap and rotor, plug wires, and the air filter. All these together have only ever made about half the difference that the 02 sensor made.
Well that gives you a start!
