considering a 97 Aero with an AUTO trans (yes, ...) or a BMW 528 Posted by John Fitzgerald [Email] (#77) [Profile/Gallery] (more from John Fitzgerald) on Wed, 15 Nov 2000 18:24:57 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
(1998) w/ comparable mileage. I've had 2 9000T's, a 99, and a 96 but the demands of driving Chicago tollroad rush-hour plus my lack of enthusiasm for the 9-5 are forcing me to consider other brands (horrors), most likely a 528 with a split rear seat (can't afford the 528 wagon, although it's tempting ...).
My current 9000T, an 87 auto trans with 147k, is running fine but I'm looking at the years, not just the miles, and thinking/shopping for a replacement. This trans went at 112k and cost me $2000 plus to rebuild -- and it still doesn't shift anywhere as smooth as the BMW, especially from fourth to third, either to pass or on a a hill.
Been looking but would like feedback on the Aero w/ auto trans -- it's a bit de-tuned, right? Is it the same gearbox as the 87? Shift points, gearing, etc, or is it beefier (wishful thinking?).
Considerations on a '98 528 -- pretty good freq of repair/reliability index and handling feels just as good/better than the Aero. The split rear seats are about the only way I could transition after many years of Saab versatility ...
Ok, fire away. Anything I'm missing?
