When I replaced the water pump I didn't take the liner out simply because I had no manual to follow and didn't realize that it isn't hard to get it off. Replacing the pump from the top is definitely do-able if that's how you choose to go. I had to take the liner out a few months after I did the pump to replace the inner tie rod, and saw that it gives very easy access to the pump. The job is fairly straight forward, although getting one of the 6 (?) bolts out is difficult because the water pipe that goes to the back of the engine block partly covers it. I had to remove this metal pipe before getting at the bolt. Not sure if this will be a problem with the liner out, but I would imagine that it is. Getting the same metal pipe back into the new pump with a fresh seal on it was the hardest part of the job for me. I had to wiggle it back and forth before it finally seated into the pump. Good luck with the job. Make sure that you completely remove the old gasket from the block before installing the new pump!
