Keith- Here we go again, so for everyone reading, please take notes:
Indeed, your 1990 9KT has the ACC II. The following steps will restore your illumination:
1) Remove battery negative battery cable-safety precaution.
2) Slide out ash tray
3) Reach in underneath ACC unit to the rear of unit and push it towards you, out of the dash opening.
4) Disconnect the 12 and 39 pin plugs from rear of unit. The twelve pin pulls straight out, the 39 is sort of hinged on its right side as viewed
from the back of the unit. Careful not to bend any pins.
5) Place unit on work surface and remove the 6 or so small brass screws that secure the plastic face to the rest of the unit.
6)Carefully (!) seperate the face from the rest of the unit. There is some ribbon cable and such inside that you don't want to disturb. At this point look at the PC board underneath the grey ribbon cable. You will see 5 or 6
grey retainers that have a slotted hole. These carry the lamps that illuminate your switches. Think christmas tree light holders...sort of.
7) Turn a quarter turn or so until you can lift them off the PC board. Now you have the lamp and its carrier to hand. Look carefully at how the wire leads of the lamp are inserted and wound in the carrier. The replacement lamps are 14v at about 80 ma. RadioShack.com (NOT the retail stores) sells them cheap. You want a T1 1/2 or T1 3/4 size lamp or closest you can get with stiff wire leads.Too large and they won't fit back in. Use needle nose pliers or a small screwdriver to undo the old lamp from the carrier
and seat new one and wrap wires properly. Cut flush with a good pair of diagonal cutters.
8) Re-seat lamp carriers in holes and turn so they don't fall out.
9) Re-assemble unit, return to vehicle, replace all wires carefully, re-connect battery cable, re-set radio code. You may have to re-calibrate the ACC II per owner's manual. Wait till dark and admire your work.
10) This is the ONLY thing I know how to do on my car-same model and year.
Good luck.
