I am going to try to make this Saab story as short as possible but it has been a killer... with my 1991 9000 CD turbo. I got the a/c repaired in Ontario, and it stopped working when I drove to Nova Scotia. A so-called reputable radiator/a/c shop replaced the evaporator.... and in doing so the heater fan stopped working (It was working when I drove the car to the shop!). These mechanics could not find out why it didn't work so I took it to a Saab dealer in Halifax and they did not know why, said I'd need a new control box ($1300 in Canada with installation) and charged me $277 to tell me that they didn't know what was wrong with the car. Every other aspect of the control box works... temperature changes appropriately, defrosters front and rear go on and off appropriately, control box directs heat to floor, front, etc. but the heater fan does not work and so the air is not being forced out. When I turn on the control box I can even hear a hum that increases in volume as I switch the heat on.
I took the car back to Ontario where my mechanic tested everything. The fan works when power is put to it, which means that the fan is not faulty. The control box works except for the fan. We learned that this model of Saab has several different possible wiring patterns and my mechanic did not have the diagrams (he is a foreign car specialist but doesn't service many Saabs). So he sent me to the Saab dealer in Ontario. They could not find the problem either... and again said that I would need a new control box and it would cost about $1300 with installation, and if that did not solve the problem, I would still have to pay for the control box. I went back to my mechanic. He opened the control box and used a magnifying glass to try to find a bad circuit. He couldn't see anything wrong. To help me now that it is cold here, he independently wired the heater fan on at a medium speed (using a resistor)...so that I could at least drive the car in this cold weather, but he could only make it stay on continuously...and of course this is just a temporary measure.
I would be sooooo grateful if any of you could give me help in solving this problem. Frankly, my mechanic and the Saab dealer mechanic (Kitchener, Ontario) do not have a solution.
Many thanks in advance. I am still grateful for the advice I was given here as to where to find the intermittent wiper relay! (behind the glove box).
