For what it's worth, I just got my car back after having the shift coupler replaced, and what a difference it made!!! My shifter would hit metal on metal in neutral if I pulled it all the way to the left, and it's because my coupler, which is made of rubber, had some cracks in it, and it was allowing the shifter to move around much more than it should.
Now, the shifter feels much tighter, and it doesn't slosh around the gear-box anywhere near as much as it did. Shifts are crisper, as is 1st-to-2nd and neutral-to first. Still not BMW-like, but immensely better than it was.
If anybody has an older 9000 and the shifter doesn't feel as tight as it used to, you may have the same phenomenon. Replacing it was the best $80 bucks I've spent in years....
The beast is BACK! (too bad it's snowing in CT.)
