The mechanical assembly of the automatic gearbox is provided by a hydrodynamic torque converter, equipped with a coupling to dampen torsional vibrations; to obtain the four forward gears and the reverse gear a "Ravigneaux" epicyclic train is used.

In first, second and reverse gear, the movement is transmitted through a torque converter; in third the gearbox functions according to the division of power criteria: approximately 40% is transmitted hydraulically through the converter, whilst the remaining 60% is transmitted mechanically through the vibration damper. In fourth gear all the power is transmitted mechanically; the complete exclusion of the torque converter allows transmission performance to be increased even at high speeds.

Through the four solenoid valves contained in the electro-hydraulic group, located on the top of the mechanical assembly, the electronic control unit interacts with the hydraulic functioning of the gearbox assigning the necessary commands to the clutch, brakes and free wheel couplings. Shifting to a higher or lower gear depends on the position of the gas pedal, in relation to vehicle speed, to brake pedal activation, to the engine's characteristic parameters and to the operating program selected.

A lever (1 ) is used to select the gear, situated on the central console, fitted with a safety button (2) preventing accidental selections. It is connected to the mechanical group by a flexible element, and also acts on an electric device, located on the gearbox which transmits a coded electrical signal for the lever position to the control unit (P, R, N, D, 3, 2,1 ).
