Leave the head gasket. The gearbox may need more than just a syncro ring. If the gearbox feels rough or grinds in third, a new third gear and selector sleve may need replacement also. Heres how it works: when you select third, the sleve applies pressure to the syncro which inturn slows the gear down enough to match speed with the selector sleve. The grinding or rough feeling the gearbox has is because the gears are not at the same speed. The "dog teeth" on both the third gear and sleve are grinding. These teeth are shaped like arrow heads. When worn, they become rounded off and cannot mesh smoothly with each other causing difficult shifting. Because of this, the syncro ring has to work overtime and needless to say, takes a beating. The syncro now is actually smaller in diameter and cannot provide the force necessary to slow the gear down. Its like worn out brakes trying to stop your car.
