9K Aero Tranny Needs to be Replaced?! HELP!!

I've been having various tranny problems in the last five weeks which have gotten progressively worse. First, the shifting into second becomes more difficult (coupled with some tranny backlash) and then most recently, the car was actually stuck in second gear and wouldn't come out until I gave it a heavy-handed shove. Coupled with this is a whining/whirring sound which is in every gear after I let off the gas. As soon as I put in the clutch, the noise goes away.
What the hell happened to my newly-used vehicle that I purchased 4 months ago?? I thought the '94 and later Aeros had tougher trannies?!! FYI - the car is/has been bone stock.
BTW, I had the car looked at today by a VERY reputable independent Saab mechanic and he wants to pull the tranny to tear it down to diagnose the problem. He thinks that the synchros or something else is shot and I may need a remanufactured Saab tranny. If this is the case, I may as well do the clutch too (71K miles on original clutch) and I'm probably looking at a total or just under $3,000 to do this right.
What options do I have?? Suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
Derek
AKA I was going to start saving for an engagement ring but kiss that idea goodbye!!
