Not a lot of discussion on this topic lately, but if you check through the archives in the past year and a half, there is TONS of discussion about whether, types, intervals, leaks/no leaks, etc.
For a quick synopsis, I'd say that the sentiment seems to be in favor of synthetic. Royal Purple, got mine at oiltown.com cheaply, Amsoil, and Mobil 1, rated in that order, seem to be the favored synthetics. The Duraguard filter mentioned above also seems well liked.
Yes, most of the synthetics will clean crud out of the engine from old fossil impurities. Advice is to change it after 2-3000 miles the first time, and perhaps again at 4-6k if older high milage car, then every 10k.
Imagine I left out a fair amount, but that is a rough overview off the top of my head. Check those archived posts for the details. Good luck
By the way, there is a contingent which believes that a good fossil like Castrol GTX, is just fine for these cars, and have used it with 3k oil changes for 300k miles on their Saabs. So it is not a black and white issue. Good Luck!
