From personal experience, sounds like the turbo..as you indicated , major smoke for no apparent reason. Actually, the replacement is technically not difficult..not cheap either. The dealer will be most expensive. Approx 3 years ago I replaced my own in the driveway. First you need a source from which to purchase the turbo..I bought a new one for $660.00 from a local place here in Raleigh, NC., It is in the yellow pages advertised as a fuel injection specialist and mostly the work on big rigs, tractor/trailers and they ordered the new turbo for me..when it came in, I took them my SAAB turbo and the "indexed" it for me..unbolted/seperated it in the center and turned/adjusted it so the orifaces would line up and match my old one.
I installed in reverse order and that was it..BUT, be careful with the exhaust manifold bolts as thay can break off as they have been super hot..done that, but worked thru it..
The key is to figure out why the old one went out as you could just ruin the new one..if you don't change the oil regularily, could be that simple..good luck
