A 3" downpipe will go a long ways towards relieving flow restrictions,
relative to a 2 1/4" diameter pipe - it's something like a 75% increase
in flow area. I bought a JT downpipe, made by a Swedish firm, that was
very well constructed out of aluminized steel and included the threaded
boss for the O2 sensor and a flex joint that precedes the cat'. It made
a considerable 'seat-of-the-pants' difference, in terms of performance.
The cost was less than half what Abbott gets for their downpipe ($200
w/shipping). In fact my whole exhaust system ended up less than what
Abbot gets for the downpipe. Although I have no middle resonator, the
3" cat' ($100 - CarSound) and 3" muffler (Magnaflow - $100) give the
9000 a very nice 'growl' that's not considered 'loud' to these 50+ year
old ears. I don't have any before/after dyno figures, but subjectively,
I'd say it's the first place to begin any modification on a turbo. BTW,
it might be considered more appropos to post this kind of question on the
'Performance' BB - don't want to infringe on their terrritory, eh?
