If the A/C belt cannot be tightened, your pulley is gone. This happened to my 87 9000 in 1998. A week after replacing the main idler pulley, the bearing on the A/C pulley went bad, and the pulley dropped into the front part under the radiator. The pulley was so hot it stuck to the plastic. As for Aaron replacing his A/C. I don't know where you are, but I live in Maryland. My compressor clutch went out the week after Mother's day in 98'.
I replaced the compressor with a rebuilt from Impex Distributors, 1-800-736-3550, for about $308 including the shipping and refund of the core charge. My Saab indy installed the compressor with a new rec/dryer, expansion valve and pound of R-12 for under $400. My A/C has worked like a charm ever since. The system needs to be evacuated and the rec/dryer and expansion valve should be replaced.
