>> I am yet to fit it, and was buying it a stupid mistake?
It can be fitted, but you're into a real chore if you do it yourself. In the first place the kit when purchased new comes with some odd-sized "cage nuts" that need to be shoehorned into the existing square holes in the car body. These are not re-usable and cannot be ordered from Saab. Thinking I was screwed, pun unintended, I discovered the cage nuts that are used in the doors are the same outside size and shape, though the thread size is smaller. What I did was to order the needed number of these cage nuts and match them up with screws from a local hardware store. This worked.
Even after you conquer this obstacle, you are in for a two-hour ordeal, at least. The carpet must be cut, then glued back, and you'd better think and act this procedure out *exactly* as specified in the instructions. If you don't have the written instructions, I can fax them to you. Don't try to install it without the instructions!
>> ...clearance between the seats...?
It's a little tight and rubs a bit, but isn't a problem.
>> Is the centre cubby hole that restricted by it? Does it get in the way of the gearstick and handbrake?
As for whether this is a worthwhile addition or not, I'd say that if you didn't have to install it, it would be an asset if you do a lot of highway driving. If not, don't bother. The console lid will not open up completely and must be held up to access the console, but is usable--and you get used to the limited movement of the lid. I can't see how you would use the cup holders inside the console, if you have them. For me, shifting the 5-speed is not a fluid experience with the armrest down, but can be done. I always have the console folded up when driving in the city.
It stays up 99% of the time for me, making me wonder why I bothered with it, especially considering I installed this armrest twice, once on my '91, then the '95 Aero.
