Interesting that you had valve train problems. I have used Mobil 1 exclusively since 1977. When I started it came in a metal can and was only available in 5W-20. The test procedures of the time were not written to deal with synthetics. At the time Mobil's publications via SAE indicated that they wanted to provide (under extreme conditions) the same protection that a 30W oil would under ideal conditions. They discussed at length the effort to make Mobil 1 offer the same usage and leak characteristics of conventional oils. They often advertised the 25K oil change. One engine I owned had been "cost engineered" to eliminate certain oil passages to the connecting rod / crankshaft bearing area. On an engine that got religious 3K mile dino oil changes, I was rebuilding it at 52K. Being a poor college student at the time, I chose not to redo the crank, i.e. I rebuilt the engine to factory specs. From that time on I used M1. At 140K the engine was still running fine with NO mechanical problems....the body on the other hand was a bucket of rust.
As far as fuel economy goes, there are so many variables it is actually very difficult to get consistent results by topping off the tank. Different temperatures, a slightly different tilt of the parking lot, was the wind blowing while you drove, was traffic heavier, etc can make a difference. I would wager that it would take at least 5 tanks to get a meaningful number. The only way to really measure fuel mileage is in a lab under controlled conditions.
I am curious though, what exactly is premature valve train wear and which engine?
Thanks,
hr
