The car has plenty of life left. Putting in a new transaxle can be done
without pulling the engine, but you'll need a lift. The drivers' side
of the sub-frame can be dropped, along with the transaxle. If this approach is used, the job can be done in a day, easy. If you don't have
access to a lift, then the engine/trans. must be pulled, which requires
disconnecting a lot of ancillaries, wires, and hoses. For one who's
done it before, it could conceivably be done in a day, but for someone
with no experience, I would say allot yourself two days. I'd highly
recommend changing out the heater core while the engine is out, as it's
a bear to change otherwise. Also, with 156k on the vehicle, I'd seriously
consider doing the steering rack, if you're going to pull the engine.
