I am going to switch over to R134a on my '91 9000S, as soon as my remanufactured compressor comes in. It was supposed to have been here by now, but now I am told it will be here tomorrow. I bought it from a company over the internet called airpartsonline.com, but my mechanic is doing the conversion. If you want to wait for my results, e-mail me, and I will let you know how it goes.
You are on the right track with the receiver/dryer and expansion valve. Are your hoses in good shape? You will need to flush out the old system to get all the oil out of it. You will need to decide whether to go with a used, rebuilt, or new compressor. There is also a conversion kit available that has R134a compatible seals, oil and other parts. There are a number of vendor options that are much cheaper than the dealer. Check out the parts sponsors/advertisers on this website. A couple of other sources for A/C parts I have found, but never bought from are http://www.thepartsbin.com and http://www.rhgarage.com. I know airpartsonline has a rebuilt compressor for your model year for under $200. I also know that my A/C compressor is a different model (Sanden SD7 vs. SD5), which may make some difference on how well it cools. You can get A/C info on the Sanden website and the airpartsonline website.
