If it is the gear in the road speed sensor that has failed, there is no reason for a new transmission. Basically, the RSS (my shorthand) is a small motor that puts out a low-voltage AC signal that increases with speed. It lives on top of the differential behind the engine. If you look up when you're under the car to change the oil filter, you'll notice it. There is a wire coming out of the top. The gear you mention is a plastic worm-type and serves to drive this motor from the differential via a square shaft. I physically broke mine while attempting to separate the tranny from the engine during a clutch removal. The dealer quoted me about $150 if I remember correctly for the little motor and $30 or so for the plastic gear. Replacing it isn't a big deal - if you are under the car it can be removed by loosining a small bolt and pulling it out.
Good Luck!
