...on your blanket viscosity recommendation. Going with a 0w30 in hotter or even moderate climates is, IMHO, foolhardy. Saab doesn't recommend 0w30 under any circumstances, sythetic or fossil, and not even 5w30 unless "in climates with temperatures consistently below -20°C (-4°F)."
Owners manuals are far less detailed, but the service manuals spell it out.
It also says to use 15w50 or 20w50 in the 2.3L engine when temps never fall below 59°F. This fits the climates of many areas of the country during summer months.
However, the reality is that you are correct that using 15w50 or 20w50 is probably unnecessary except perhaps in the Sahara desert, and that if you must use a thinner oil going to a synthetic makes it much more tenable. But though you may go on and on about the benefit of using Amsoil in its 0w30 incarnation, the facts are that a more moderate viscosity of any quality synthetic in the climates normally encountered in the U.S. is the most rational option.
