...and negative lead last when installing a battery? [Haynes, page 5A-3, "Battery - removal and refitting"]
What difference does it make? Whether you connect the positive terminal last or the negative last, the electrical circuit will be completed---and the battery's voltage will be applied to the car's electrical system---upon the connection of the last terminal, whichever it is, and any spark will occur at that time and at that terminal. What difference does it make whether the spark (if any) occurs at the positive or at the negative terminal?
(Note that, as far as I can tell, this is a different situation from jump starting. In that situation, you want any spark to occur as far away from the dead battery as possible, so that implies that the last connection has to be the negative one.)
