I just converted my '91 to R-134a, but I had a leaky compressor shaft seal. I replaced the receiver/dryer and expansion valve at the same time, just because of age. I also had to replace the hoses, unplanned, because they would not hold a vacuum. With all the parts, my conversion was less than $1,000. While my system cools fine, my saab indy mechanic says that R-134a does not cool as well as R-12. If you do not have any leaks, why convert at this time? I would just have an A/C shop replace the expansion valve. It shouldn't be too difficult. The part is inexpensive. I saw them on thepartsbin.com for around $26. Check the TSN sponsors for pricing.
