>> Do you change your filter more frequently than you change your RP oil?
No, 10k for both. FWIW, RP recommends changing the filter at 5k intervals, but further scrutiny reveals that this recommendation was assuming the lowest common denominator for filters. I.e., if you use a $2 Fram, change at 5k, but a high quality synthetic-fiber filter (Duraguard Gold, Amsoil, Mobil 1), or perhaps many in between, should do fine to 10k. Keep in mind that Saab recommends 10k for both oil and filter, regardless of brand or type, and their branded filter is a re-labeled middle-grade (but very good) AC-Delco Duraguard.
>> Wasn't there some question before as to whether RP was semi- or full-synthetic, and wasn't the point made that what really matters is the additive package, not necessarily so much whether an oil is semi or full. If RP is semi, is it the one exception to the "full is better" rule?
I still think that a blend with a top-drawer additive package is a good recipe--and although I can't name one, they may exist. I thought for years that RP's API-rated oils (i.e., non-racing varieties) were blends, but I used them because I felt the additive package made up for the small percentage of fossil oil present. However, a very picky friend who's been using RP 20w50 in his BMW Boxer-engined motorcycle and was worried about it, wrote RP asking about this and was assured that it was in fact a full-synthetic.
Frankly, I think a claim of "full-synthetic" is legally permissible even with some non-synthetic content, but I don't know the threshold. I really don't care, as I'm interested in film strength and oxidation resistence. If a blend or fossil oil works better in these areas, so be it--but show me the objective tests to prove it.
>> According to Saab Discoveries, Spring 2001, Saab Turbo Oil is semi.
Thanks for the info. I haven't seen any specs on it at all, as Saab quit sending me literature years ago. I've found that if you buy a used Saab after owning a car purchased new, your social standing drops a rung or two.
>> Saab Turbo Oil is in saabcatalog.com, $2.50/liter. (Liter?!)
Liter? That doesn't compute. Really, though, maybe they're trying to standardize internationally. I assume the Europeans, et al, measure their oil in liters. Can anyone verify this?
>> Interestingly, it is listed among the items for 9-3/9-5 but not for 900/9000. (Why?)
Well, I had a recent Saab catalog here that had *no* 9K accessories in it at all. I threw it in the trash. There are still some things available on the website, but not enough for me.
