There were several improvements made from 94 and up. The latest revision was some time in the fall of 96 I believe, so not all 96 MY cars have that gearbox. I'm not familiar with all the changes, but I've heard from people working at the Saab lab that the 97 gearbox is by far the strongest.
So I would definetely make sure that all necessary parts are upgraded. Symmetrical crown wheel (?) and Timken-bearings are some of the changes I remember.
Good luck!
/ Karl
