I don't know where you've seen evidence of a "wide-spread belief," but
I've heard nothing that would suggest that synthetics aren't just as advantageous for air-cooled engines as for others. In fact, I'd wager there is even more rationale for its use since air-cooled engines have poorer control of cooling. With no thermostatic control to accelerate warming, the inherent flow characteristics when cold are an asset. When hot with insufficient air flowing over cooling fins, the ability of synthetic to handle high heat is also an advantage. I've read many articles on motorcycle lubrication and the prevaling wisdom is that synthetics are the preferred product to use. I have never seen one article to recommend otherwise.
My Harley runs a 50/50 combo of Royal Purple 20w50 and Nitro-50 racing oil (both synthetics) and at 66k miles of operation through cold nights in CO to 110°F runs across TX in August it shows no signs of wear gauged from oil consumption and compression. Analyses run after 5k drains show that the oil is healthy, doing its job, and engine wear revealed from wear-metal content at a very low level.
I have also run synthetic in my air-cooled tractor mower for eight years with no problems, though the rest of the mower is falling apart around the engine.
