Some high-end synthetic engine oils, like Mobil 1 and Royal Purple, contain molybdenum, but not in the form of moly disulfide. That substance is effective as an additive for grease and, arguably, gearbox fluid. I'm not a chemist, but my understanding is that moly disulfide is a solid and can be captured by the oil filter, which obviously isn't a good thing.
The moly used as an engine oil additive is NOT a solid and is considered one of the best anti-wear additives known, yet is expensive and not normally used by manufacturers. One motorcycle magazine that performed extensive testing on various oils stated that if a manufacturer uses moly as an additive, that company is concerned about achieving maximum lubricity and protection in their product.
My last oil analyses on the Saab showed moly content at around 85 ppm using RP 15w40.
