I have read a handful of threads regarding individuals with 1991 models who end up with trashed 2.3's because of sprocket failure (improper hardening) on the balance shafts. I don't think that this failure is common, but it does seem to exist, and it definitely seems to be more than just a coincidence.
As an aside to Ron ve's letter, I have a 91 9Kt and I love the car. I have to admit that I find the 93 and on body style to appear more contemporaty; however, I think the differences between the two body styles are only noticed by other SAABies, and I find mine to be attarctive anyway! In addition, I like the fact that; as I understand it, 91 is the last year that the engine management system is pure Bosch. Beginning in '92, I believe that the engine management system became a SAAB system. This fact becomes significant if you do not reside near a competent SAAB factory service center. Bosch service centers, by comparison, are plentiful.
If you look at a 91, check the common problem areas thoroughly since the car is older. If you are unaware of these weaker components, visit Quasi's website on TSN ( check the links) He provides a very thorough list of components to check prior to purchase.
Good Luck and I am sure that you will enjoy whatever vintage you choose to buy.
Dan
