My '95 Aero also shows a 6% difference, the speedo being faster. The SCC computer is correct by my calculations using a stopwatch and mileage markers (multiple, long-distance checks). Most cars and motorcycles have speedos that read fast, and a friend and I have tried to speculate why. CYA legal move? E.g., someone gets in an accident and his savy attorney discovers his speedo is slow, and the car manufacturer is automatically at fault because they caused the owner to drive faster than what was safe. I can see it now.
My previous four Saabs had speedos that were dead-on, and my Harley has a calibrated police speedo that is also dead on--but that's the limit of my experience with speedometer accuracy. I've thought of ways to rectify this since calculating correct speed in my mind as I drive is irritating. One way is increasing my tire size, but 9K's don't lend themselves to tire sizes much larger than what is already on this car, so that's out. Another is to replace the speedo gear, but I never determined what was involved and how to determine the correct size by part numbers and which one would likely work to pull the speed down exactly 6%.
