In my followup to Pete's Aug 14 message, "Temp guage reading high" I told of the high temp guage reading situation in my 93 Aero and how I've tried to "fix" or at least reduce it. Recently, upon patching up holes in the spoiler, I found that the spoiler had been changed as follows.
In the center underneath section of the spoiler there is a deflector that projects upwards toward the bottom of the radiator. It runs about exactly the width of the radiator, and in my car, it has been cut down to project only about an inch upwards. There is a manufatuured score line at this height where it was cut. Also, there are six supporting ribs. These were not cut very smoothly. Thus, one can tell they were cut to reduce the height of the deflector. Estimating from the drawing in my service manual (Saab part 358853) page 860-7 it appears that the deflector for CS bodies should be approximately 2-3/4 to 3 inches high. This is also the case for CD models (page 860-8) though the spoilers are slightly different. The scoring would indicate a manufacturing choice for different markets or a recall of some sort.
The deflector appears to be designed to deflect some of the incoming air that passes underneath the A/C condenser and the intercooler such that this fresh air moves directly into the front of the radiator. Since this deflector in my car was shortened, I fabricated a piece of plastic that effectively lengthened this deflector to its approximate original 2-3/4 inch height. This mod seems to help cooling very little (reduce the temp guage a mm or two) at speeds up to about 55 mph. However, there is no change at higher speeds probable because the plastic I used may bend and become ineffective at higher speeds.
I note that this deflector is positioned at about the center of the depth of the radiator and may be made more effective if I move it forward an inch such that it is positioned near the front extremity of the radiator. When I find time, I'm going to experiment.
Meanwile, I'd like to know whether the deflector in other cars have been shortened. This deflector is hard to see because everything underneath the radiator is black. From underneath the hood, you can easily feel it by running one hand from the left side the cooling fan behind the radiator all the way to touch the bottom of the spoiler. Then feeling the bottom of the spoiler moving your hand toward the front of the car, there should be a piece that projects upwards. It's about an eight of an inch thick, runs the width of the radiator, and may be as short as about an inch or as high as about 3 inches. Let me know the approximate height of the one in your car. Also, where is it positioned in terms of the front, middle or back of the rediator.
Thanks,
