Regarding Ericsson, they do have the best reputation for ZF autos for Saabs that I know of. That being said, it's the same trans that's used in a lot of Benz's and BMW's and Volvo's too, and you are in import car land, so it might behoove you to sniff around in your back yard for someone who has a good rep on ZF transmissions, not neccessarily Saab's. I *think* retail on an Ericcson trans is $1900.00, but perhaps they've had a price increase. 8-10 hours labor sounds about right.
Cory is trying a low mile used from Japan, he paid about $900, don't know about warranty.
They will *probably* remove the whole front subframe with engine and trans attached, so yes, this IS a good time to look at a lot of ancillary components, with a car your vintage, if it hasn't been done recently, motor mounts, water pump, check harmonic balancer and pulleys. Although not related, now would be a good time to peek at that timing chain and see what that's like.
It would be worth it if you asked your mechanic to just go around the engine and subframe while it's out and just have him clean and check electrical connections, check hoses, etc., and just give him the green light to fix anything off he finds. After all, hopefully this will be the last time time engine comes out for a looooong time and it's the most cost effective way if you're not doing it yourself. HTH
