You didn't mention it, but I would replace the clutch disc unless it had been done in the last year or so.
Although rebuilding the slave can work, I would recommend replacing it with a new part. I bought a slave from an aftermarket source for $99. Considering that the job of removing/reinstalling the tranny takes about 15 hours (at least for me), I would go with new rather than rebuilt.
Could the black stuff you mention be oil soaked clutch disc dust? Oil often finds its way into the bellhousing through the rear main seal, which, as I understand, is very hard to replace. No big deal if it's not excessive.
While your in there, check the pressure plate for heat cracking uneven wear, etc. If present, replace that along with the clutch.
Another relitivly cheap part ($16 or so) is the throw out bearing. If it sounds gritty when you turn it by hand, replace it.
Good luck! If you have any questions give my an email
