Dave produces no cause-and-effect relationship here, as is obvious. As I've mentioned many times here, my '91 had BL installed for eight years and 124k miles before selling it in '99, since it was new, and I had no cooling-system problems of any kind: No water pump, theremostat, or heater core maladies.
As for installing in older systems, I've had my '66 Corvette for 19 years and its 'stat has not been changed since I've owned it, and I don't know when if it had ever been replaced between '66 and '82. It finally failed about three weeks ago, and I have been running BL in it for the 19 years I've owned it. Did BL cause the 'stat to fail? What do you think?
My '95 Aero got its first BL treatment in '99, and I've had no problems of any kind. I have all repair records, including those made before I owned it, and the thermostat has apparently never been changed. Thus, it is probably original.
Dave's claim is bogus, and the link between a failed 'stat and BL unfounded. One must remember that Saabs are known for weak 'stats, although from my experience, my impression is that it may actually prolong thermostat life. I'll still say that I think that BL may be an effective fix for the ubiquitous heater-core maladies experienced by many Saab owners. From my experience it does not cause premature thermostat failures. Knowing the way it and the 'stat mechanism works, I don't see how it possibly could.
