Veteran Saab owners automatically put their cars in REVERSE upon parking -- this is because since the 99's all Saabs (except 9000's) have had their anti-theft mechanism set up so that the transmission lever (rather than the steering wheel) locked when the ignition was locked. The key won't come out of the ignition unless the gear lever is in reverse. So those of us who have had 99's and/or "OG" 900's follow the habit. I know that this feature applies to the new 9-5, at least in automatic form.
It was also drilled into my head as a teenager that using both the parking brake and leaving the car in gear was the safe thing to do--also the "curb" the wheels when parking on a grade. Belt-and-braces mentality maybe, but what's the harm?
