Do it by looking at it, placing it in the center. You can use a tool like a round rod, but you can get is close enough by sight. When you go to put the tranny back in, get someone to help by turning the driver cup so that the input shaft turns as you push the tranny in. This helps to align the splines with the clutch disk.
