I installed the drop-in (OEM replacement) type on my '91, then moved it to my '95 Aero where it has been in use for two years. The filter may be a bit more throaty than stock, euphoniously if so, but the beauty is that it can be cleaned and re-oiled indefinitely. In fact, they purportedly filter better the dirtier they get, although I suspect that there is a point that performance is degraded.
Mine hasn't been cleaned in 2½ years so I'm about due. Maybe later today I can do it when I can let it dry overnight. I clean the K&N on my Harley every year or just before a long trip (like from Louisiana to New England/New Brunswick this past June), and there is never evidence of any dirt or other contamination inside the filter or carburetor.
I would prefer the drop-in type over the cone-shaped filters that are exposed to the engine heat. Cooler air means better performance, but I've never seen any performance comparisons between the two.
