The battery light is on (I assume it is) and the battery isn't charging because the alternator isn't spinning. The alternator is driven by a belt off the main pulley (harmonic balancer).

Yes, it could be a shot harmonic balancer. If it isn't spinning the belt, the alternator won't turn and your battery won't charge. But do you still have power steering? If so, then the power steering pump which runs off the same belt is turning. And if the engine hasn't overheated, the water pump is still being turned, too (same belt, again).

You might just have a loose or worn belt. The squeal you hear is the alternator pulley slipping against the belt. Power has to be transmitted from the belt to the pulley, and if the belt is loose, something can slip. The alternator takes a lot of energy to turn, so it's a prime point for the belt to slip.

Another option is that the alternator bearing is shot. Again, the alternator pulley will slip against the belt (hence the noise) and since the pulley isn't turning, or turning fast enough, you don't charge the battery.

Questions - did you still have power steering? The wheel would be VERY heavy if you didn't. Was the car overheating? Was the Battery light on in the dash?
If the car wasn't overheating and you still had power steering, I think the harmonic balancer is OK. You might just have a loose or worn belt.

Don't apologize for length. Most folks have modems faster than 2400 baud these days, so a message download isn't that bad. And more information is better!

Good luck!
