Pistons, for one... Posted by Larry West [Email] (#1140) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Larry West) on Sun, 3 May 2009 06:33:28 In Reply to: Turbo or NOT Turbo??, BAAB [Profile/Gallery] , Sat, 2 May 2009 20:22:27 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
And a whole lot more...
Turbos had a lower mechanical compression ratio than non-turbos. It'll run without the turbo, but you'd be down on power compared to a non-turbo car...
79s *should* already have the proper sodium-cooled valves, even in the non-turbos.
Fuel distributor and air metering are different, you'll need lambda if your 79 doesn't have it (US turbos used lambda for extra enrichment).
Exhaust (and you'll need something custom if you're using the 81- intake-controlled wastegate instead of the exhaust-controlled wastegate), radiator, radiator fans, camshaft,
Possibly the block, also, as the turbo blocks have a threaded hole in the side, aft of the starter (not to be confused with the coolant drain/engine heater hole) where the oil drains back into the sump from the turbo. I know from 1981, the hole is in all blocks (plugged on non-turbos), but I don't believe it was so on the B motor.
There's quite a lot of difference there.
