I did one 20 years ago, and it worked fine.
You need a parts car for the shifter and foot pedals < everything will bolt up.
If your 78 has power steering, that could be the only major snag. The PS and manual steering racks don't mount the same way, so you'd have to leave the power steering in there. Plays hell when plumbing the clutch master cylinder as it gets really tight down there. The one I did required engine and trans removal if the clutch master ever needed replaced. That never was an issue cus the car got sold and wrecked a year later.
